JakeBot is perfect for a highly multilingual server, with its **advanced and super easy-to-use automatic translation systems**. You can modify almost everything to your needs, including diverting results to different channels, what style results are in, what roles/members are affected by the translation and more! You can get up to 800 free characters per upvote with several upvoting websites available. The free tier offers **6000 characters per month** Discord Message Commands also allow any user to **privately translate** a message into a language of their choice. Run without any options to edit everything. ### View Setup `/settings automatic_translation view [name]`\ View details on a specific Auto Translation setup ### List All `/settings automatic_translation list`\ View basic details on all existing Auto Translation setups ## Automatic Translation Settings ### Character Limit `/settings automatic_translation character_limit [limit]`\ Set the maximum number of characters to be automatically translated. Any messages longer than this will be cut off with an ellipsis. ### Translator `/settings translator [choice]`\ Select whether you want to use Google Translate, Microsoft Translate or DeepL. Google Translate and DeepL are only available to premium users. ## Patreon ### Dashboard `/patreon dashboard`\ This shows you all the information regarding your Patreon tier. ### Upgrade Server `/patreon upgrade [server]`\ This can be used to upgrade a server you want to have your premium tier. You can specify the server (ID Recommend, listed in the dashboard) but running it in a server will upgrade it. ### Downgrade Server `/patreon downgrade [server]`\ This can be used to downgrade a server you no longer want to have your premium tier. You can specify the server (ID Recommend, listed in the dashboard) but running it in an upgraded server will downgrade that server. ### Reassign `/patreon reassign`\ This will send a new unique link to allow you to change the Patreon profile that's attached to your JakeBot profile, for example, if you don't use your old Patreon account anymore. ## Upvoting & Bonus Characters ### Dashboard `/reward dashboard`\ View details regarding your upvote status, upvote tokens and bonus characters. ### Redeem Upvote Tokens `/reward redeem_upvotes [token_amount]`\ Redeem 1 or more Upvote Tokens for a reward. Specify "all" to redeem all of them, this is the default ### Allocate Characters `/reward allocate [amount] [server]`\ Allocate 1 or more of your bonus characters to a server of your choosing! Specify "all" to allocate all of them, this is the default. Run the command in the server you want to send them to, to quickly send characters. ## Global Blacklist ### List All `/settings global_blacklist list`\ View all the words on the global blacklist ### Add Words `/settings global_blacklist add [word]`\ Add a new phrase to the global blacklist, items in this list will only avoid translation when sent on their own ### Remove Words `/settings global_blacklist remove [word]`\ Remove a word from the global blacklist, a suggestion list of the words in the blacklist is provided. ## Style ### View Options `/settings2 style view_options`\ View the various style options, or view them [here](https://jakebot.co.uk/translation). ### Set Automatic Style `/settings2 style automatic_set [option]`\ Update the style of the results from an automatic translation ### Set Command Style `/settings2 style command_set [option]`\ Update the style of the results from a command translation ### Set Reaction Style `/settings2 style reaction_set [option]`\ Update the style of the results from a reaction translation ### Match Styles `/settings2 style match_styles [this] [with_this] [and_this]`\ Match one style with another, or both. ## Extras ### View Options `/settings2 extras view_options`\ View all the extra features available ### Enable Extra `/settings2 extras enable [feature]`\ Enable an extra feature from the list ### Disable Extra `/settings2 extras disable [feature]`\ Disable a feature from the list ## Message Commands See [here ](/basic-usage-and-setup/message-commands-really-cool)for information on these. ### Quick Translate This allows you to quickly translate to any language of your choosing, running it will open a menu where you can enter a language code or language name to quickly get the resulting translation! ### To English As the name implies, it will instantly and privately translate the message interacted with into English! ### To Spanish Similar to "To English" it will instantly and privately translate the message interacted with into Spanish! ### To Your Language Set whatever language you would like with `/your_language`. This button will then translate to it, once again privately. ## Miscellaneous ### Set Your Language `/your_language [language]`\ Use this to tell Jake what your chosen spoken language is, this can then be instantly translated to using `To Your Language`. ### Translate `/translate [Language] [Text to Translate]`\ This allows you to quickly translate text into a different language. ### Languages `/languages`\ View all the languages the bot can translate written in both the native language and English. It also shows the international language code for quick reference. ### Translation Usage `/translation_usage`\ This shows you how many characters your server has used this month, as well as estimated character usage for the entire month, among several other useful bits of info. ### Settings Help `/settings help`\ This gives you a breakdown of the entire Automatic Translation system's commands, useful as a quick reference. ### Old Settings `/old_settings`\ The old entirely button-based settings menu that was retired on 16/07/2023 in favour of the new slash-based system. # Troubleshooting Tips Is your auto translation setup not working quite how you expected? See if you can fix it using the advice here!
Check you haven't run out of characters Run `/translation_usage` to see! Either upvote the bot, buy an upgrade pack, a tier on Patreon or wait for next month to get more characters.
Check the bot has the right permissions It needs to be able to send messages, view channels and view message history in all the channels it's running in. If you're using style 8 or 9, it also needs to be able to create webhooks. If your messages are being reacted to with a warning shield, it normally means JakeBot has a permission issue.
Check the FROM language is part of your selected Translator In your setup, make sure the language being translated from (you can translate TO any of the languages) is available in your selected translator with `/languages`. Not all languages are available with all Translators. Change your Translator, if you have premium, with `/settings translator [option]`.
Check the old settings menu (old_settings) isn't open If the old entirely button based setup system menu `/old_settings` or `J!translation_settings` is open in a channel translations will not commence in that channel until it has been closed.
Check it isn't disabled Run `/settings automatic_translation view [setup]` to see if it's been disabled or not.
Check the channel is correct Run `/settings automatic_translation view [setup]` to make sure the channels are all correct
Check you have any special roles that may be required Run `/settings automatic_translation view [setup]` to see if it's been setup with a requirement to have a certain role for it to translate you.
Is it diverting somewhere? Run `/settings automatic_translation view [setup]` to see if it's diverting to a channel you haven't noticed.
Check both blacklists Run `/settings automatic_translation view [setup]` and `/settings global_blacklist list` to see if your trying to translate a message that's being blacklisted.
Are you trying to translate between one and three words? Then run`/settings2 extras view_options` and see if "Single Word Translation" and "Three Word Translation" are allowed.
Are you trying to translate a message that looks like a bot command? Then run`/settings2 extras view_options` and see if "CMD Activation Messages" are allowed.

/translate [Language] [Text to Translate] This allows you to quickly translate text into a different language, there is a list of suggested languages based on what you type for you to pick from to help reduce issues with incorrect languages. Noteworthy is that no matter if you are using Google Translate or Microsoft Translate, this command can access every single one of the 150+ languages the bot can translate, for free!
/settings automatic_translation new [name] [language_from] [language_to] We'll get into this more in [a later section](/basic-usage-and-setup/create-your-first-automatic-translation-setup). But this command allows you to quickly and easily create a new Automatic Translation setup
/languages View all the languages the bot can translate written in both the native language and English. It also shows the international language code for quick reference. As well as what languages are only available with Google (premium). By default, the response from this is only visible to you.
/your_language [language] Use this to tell Jake what your chosen spoken language is, this can then be instantly translated to using `To Your Language` in the[ Message Command Menu](/basic-usage-and-setup/message-commands-really-cool) (see the next page for more details)
/settings help This gives you a breakdown of the entire Automatic Translation system's commands, useful for a quick reference in a more digestible form than Discord's slash command interface.
/translation_usage This shows you how many characters your server has used this month, as well as estimated character usage for the entire month, among several other useful bits of info. By default, the response from this is only visible to you.
# Message Commands (Really Cool) All the power at your fingertips (or right mouse button) ## Overview {% hint style="success" %} **Fun Fact:** None of the translations done using this menu count towards the server's total character usage, so they can be used wherever, forever! {% endhint %} A while back Discord introduced the ability to run commands directly on a message you interacted with, either by pressing and holding on mobile, or right-clicking on desktop. With this comes a lot more power as you can translate into whatever language you want right from that menu! From that menu simply go to "Apps" and then there are 5 JakeBot commands, 4 of which are for translation!
## Commands
Quick Translate This allows you to one off quickly translate to any language of your choosing, running it will open a menu where you can enter a language code or language name to quickly get the resulting translation!
To English As the name implies, it will instantly and privately (so only you can see the result) translate the message interacted with into English!
To Spanish Similar to "To English"; it will instantly and privately (so only you can see the result) translate the message interacted with into Spanish!
To Your Language This is the fun one, you can set whatever language you would like with `/your_language`. This button will then translate to it, once again privately so only you can see the result.
# Create your first Automatic Translation setup Tired of constantly typing out the translate command? Get Jake to do all the work for you with just 1 simple command. ## Base Command {% hint style="warning" %} **Warning:** Make sure you have the "Manage Server" permission, otherwise you won't be able to see any of the commands! (Required permissions can be changed in the Discord settings) {% endhint %} `/settings automatic_translation new [name] [language_from] [language_to]` First, you will need to enter the name for this translation setup, think something like "To Spanish in General", or "All to EN in General" and make sure it's less than 32 characters! {% hint style="info" %} **Hint:** The bot can automatically translate TO any of the 150+ languages in the list, however, make sure the language you are translating FROM is part of the Translator you are using with `/languages` {% endhint %} Then specify what language messages have to be in to get translated, you can specify "all" here if desired Then specify what language you'd like those messages to be translated to, you cannot specify "all" here I'm afraid. This is all you are required to enter, it will translate everything in the language you specified sent in the channel you ran the command in. But a lot of people may want to customise things a bit more than that!
## Extra Customizability You may notice that there are a lot more options available beyond the required 3, 18 more in fact! But not to worry, a lot of them are duplicates so it's not as complicated as it first may seem. The first option, `affects_all_channels` will make the setup translate messages sent to every single channel in the server, this is further customisable as is discussed later in advanced features. Beyond that there are options for channels 1-8, if you don't want this setup to just function in the channel you ran the command in you can specify up to 8 channels or categories for it to run in here. {% hint style="info" %} **Hint:** If you need to add more than 8 channels, you can add them in the [edit menu](/basic-usage-and-setup/editing-your-setups) afterwards. {% endhint %} `to_channel1-4` is used to redirect the results from this setup to a different channel. If you'd like to add more than 4 redirections you can do so from the [edit menu](/basic-usage-and-setup/editing-your-setups#diversions). `permitted_role1-5` is used to specify roles that are affected by this setup, for example, if you had a role called "Spanish" and selected this role on this setup, only people with that role would get their messages translated. It can help to reduce accidental translations. `word_blacklist` is a list of words that if detected would result in the entire message not getting translated. For example, if you entered "lol", a message such as "that's so funny lol" would not get translated. `create_pair`creates an identical setup with `language_to` and `language_from` reversed, so if you had Spanish to English, and enabled this setting, a second setup with English to Spanish would be created with everything else the same, and when editing you can choose for any changes made to one to impact the other. ![](https://2311948898-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FfwTYJfIMlu3oKXK45dqN%2Fuploads%2FKWn3GYY4ztGTtCQfa2bd%2Fnew%20example%202.png?alt=media\&token=22e1e612-7159-47df-add7-19cbab633641) ## Send the Command! Once everything is as you'd like, it's as simple as pressing enter. Your new setup shall be created and should start working instantly!
# Viewing, deleting and disabling. See above.
View all setups `/settings automatic_translation list` Running this will display a multipage embed with a brief overview of all the setups you have created
View Complete Details on One Setup `/settings automatic_translation view [setup]` Use this to view one setup in a lot more detail. This shows you all the channels it's running in, any diversions, blacklisted words etcetera.
Delete (or disable) a Setup `/settings automatic_translation delete [setup] (action)` Using this you can delete or disable a setup, by default it will delete whatever setup you select. But under extra options, there is an `action` selection, and in that, you can select "Disable" to simply disable the specified setup. You can also tell it to delete the other half of a paired setup.
Alternate way to disable a setup `/settings automatic_translation edit [setup] (status)` This is simply an alternate way to disable a setup, we will go into more detail on the edit menu in the [next section](/basic-usage-and-setup/editing-your-setups).
# Editing your Setups Situations changed or you made a mistake? Well luckily its quick and easily to change everything on whatever setup you choose. ## Initial Command {% hint style="info" %} **Hint:** If you'd like to skip the prompt that asks whether you'd like your edits to affect the setups pair, you can specify your decision with "affect\_pair" before you send the command. {% endhint %}
`/settings automatic_translation edit [name]` From the command you can quickly change a select few settings without having to go into the button menu itself, these are: * The Name (Max 32 Characters) * From Language (What language messages have to be in to get translated) * To Language (The languages messages get translated into) * Status (Whether the setup is enabled or disabled) Everything else has to be edited in the button menu. Which can be accessed by ignoring the quick options and just sending the command. ## Button Menu
This menu is relatively straightforward to use, simply click the button of the corresponding item you'd like to modify and follow the instructions, although I shall break down the process for each item here. {% hint style="warning" %} **Important:** Try not to take too long in any of the menus, whether you are expected to type something or press a button as they will all eventually time out. {% endhint %}
Name Upon clicking the button you will be prompted to enter a new title, simply send a new message and if it's below 32 characters it shall be accepted and you will be kicked back to the previous menu.
Language Upon clicking you will be greeted with 3 more buttons, "From Language", "To Language" and Back. Simply select whichever button corresponds to the language you'd like to change. After that, you will be prompted to enter the new language.
Enable/Disable Clicking that does not bring up a menu as it instantly does what it says on the button (the button will show enable when the setup is disabled and disable when it is enabled). This is the third and final way of disabling a setup. See the other 2 methods on the [previous page](#enable-disable).
Channels This will ask you whether or not you would like to Add or Remove channels. Upon selecting one you will need to specify the channels you would like to add or remove. Do this by typing them separating each one with a comma. Eg #general, #commands, #notices. To add or remove all channels, specify "all" in the channel dialogue. View advanced features.
Whitelist Upon entering the menu, it will ask whether or not you'd like to add or remove from the whitelist. The same as the Channels menu. Upon selecting an option simply specify the roles, separated by commas, to add/remove. (Members can also be specified if desired).
Words Almost identical to the last 2 options, you are first asked if you want to add or remove. After which you specify the words of your choice to be added to the blacklist separated by commas. Diversions Diversions will be explained more in the advanced section. But were you to add any, they'd be done through this menu which operates identically to the [Channels menu](#channels).
Press exit when you are done to remove the messages. # Styling Results Not happy with the default style? Shake things up a bit with these easy commands! {% hint style="warning" %} **Warning:** [Message commands](/basic-usage-and-setup/message-commands-really-cool) cannot be styled at this time. {% endhint %}
View Style Options `/settings2 style view_options` View all the different styles available, with examples provided. You can also [view all the styles here!](https://jakebot.co.uk/translation)
Match Styles `/settings2 style match_styles [this] [with_this] (and_this)` Use this to quickly match two or all of the styles together! Put the style you'd like to match the other ones to in the first selection (this), then either one or both the other styles into "with\_this" and "and\_this" to set them to the same as the style in "this".
Set Automatic Translation Style `/settings2 style automatic_set [option]` Set the style for all translations done automatically.
Set Command Translation Style `/settings2 style command_set` Set the style for all translations done via the [translation command](/basic-usage-and-setup/basic-slash-commands#translate-language-text-to-translate).
Set Reaction Translation Style `/settings2 style reaction_set` Set the style for all translations done via reaction.
# Global Blacklist Are some messages being translated that you'd rather not be? This is your solution! ## Overview Not to be confused with the other blacklist system which works per setup and is designed to block messages from being translated if they contain a word in the system. This is designed to prevent words or phrases from being translated only if they show up alone. So for example if you put the phrase "this is a test" into the system. The message "This is a test to show x and y" would still get translated, but the message "This is a test" would not. ## Commands
List Everything in the Blacklist `/settings global_blacklist list` This shows you all the words and phrases previously appended to the blacklist
Add a word to the Blacklist `/settings global_blacklist add [word]` This can be used to add a new word or phrase to the blacklist
Remove a word from the Blacklist `/settings global_blacklist remove [word]` This can be used to remove a word from the blacklist, a list of everything currently in the blacklist will be shown.
# Extra Options Cool extras features that you may not realise you needed! ## Extra Features There are currently 6 extra features that you can enable, with the only one requiring premium being the reaction translation feature.
React to TranslateAllows the translation of a message by reacting to it with a countries flag.
CMD Activation MessageWill attempt to prevent command activation messages from being translated. Eg, Starting with ?, !, &.
Other Bot TranslationWill translate messages send by other discord bots. (Not Embed)
Single Word TranslationWill prevent the translation of messages that contain only 1 word.
Three Word TranslationWill prevent the translation of messages that contain 3 words or less.
Divert All MessagesWill divert all messages to other channels, whether something was translated or not.
## Commands
View Extra Options `/settings2 extras view_options` This shows you all the extra options available with descriptions similar to those above, and whether or not they are enabled or disabled.
Enable an Option `/settings2 extras enable [feature]` Allows you to enable an extra option from the provided list.
View Extra Options `/settings2 extras disable [feature]` Allows you to disable an extra option from the provided list.
# Diverting Results and "All Except" System Want to translate in all channel except a couple, or you want translations in one channel to be sent to another? This is how! ## Diverting Results {% hint style="warning" %} **Important:** You cannot create more than 6 diversions. {% endhint %} Diverting results are set up through the edit menu, or the new setup command, [as shown previously](/basic-usage-and-setup/editing-your-setups#diversions). Diversions work by taking the results from one setup in a channel and sending them to a different channel. If you have several languages going into one channel they will be combined into one message. [Any styles applied](/slightly-more-advanced-settings/styling-results#set-automatic-translation-style) for automatic translation will also apply to diversions. Currently, if you wanted to divert results somewhere and also send them into the original channel, you would have to create two setups. ## All Channels Except If you wanted to translate in all channels except a certain few, then that is also possible! When[ creating a translation](/basic-usage-and-setup/basic-slash-commands) if you set "affects\_all" to true, the remaining 10 channel fields serve a different use. Any channels entered into those fields will be the "exception" to the translate in all channels rule. So if you set "affects\_all" to true but entered "#general" into "channel1", messages would get translated in every channel EXCEPT #general. [In the edit menu](/basic-usage-and-setup/editing-your-setups#channels), it works a bit differently as it's message-based inputs. You can specify "all" to make a translation affect all channels, and then you specify any channels you'd like to be an exception after that, separating with commas. Eg, "all, #general" would result in messages getting translated in every channel except general again. # Command Permissions Want to change the permissions required to change Auto Translation settings? This is how! ## Overview With the change to slash commands, all permissions are now handled within Discord. You can view their official article [here](https://support.discord.com/hc/en-us/articles/4644915651095-Command-Permissions). Because of the way the translation commands are organised, and Discord's current restrictions. You are not able to set different permissions for each sub-command, eg. Manage Channels for Creating new setups, but Read Channel to view a setup. ## Examples The settings commands are in 2 groups under "settings" and "settings2", this is for a technical reason, so when changing permissions make sure you change both if that is what you want. "settings2" has style and extra options under it.
All the standalone commands, such as /translate and /translation-usage, can have their permissions set separately.
# Bonus Characters, from Purchase or Upvoting Need more translation characters? Or have you bought some and are not sure how to use them? ## The Dashboard `/reward dashboard` This is where you can view all your upvote tokens and the current number of bonus characters in your account. As well as a reminder of the commands you need to use with the system. I will go over the two ways of getting bonus characters below ## Via Upvoting You can get up to 800 characters per upvote, depending on the website you upvote on. Top.gg or Discord Bot List. Each time you upvote you gain 1 upvote token, you can redeem these using `/reward redeem_upvotes`, each time you redeem a token you will get a random amount of characters between 300 and 800. ## Via Purchase You are able to buy bonus characters via the store within Discord. Accessible via the bot's profile (doesn't always show on mobile). All you have to do is buy the relevant package. The characters will be added to your account automatically, you can view them with the aforementioned dashboard command. Once added please allocate them, as shown below. {% hint style="warning" %} Any issues with the characters you've bought please [join the support server](https://discord.com/invite/8JZwx82) as soon as possible! {% endhint %} ## Allocation `/reward allocate [amount] [server]` Once you've got all your bonus characters you just need to allocate them with the command above, if you don't specify any options it will automatically allocate all characters to the server you are typing the command in. Please be aware that once characters are allocated in most cases we are unable to remove them from the server and give them back to you. So be careful! # What's the Benefit of Premium? Is premium right for you? If so, what tier? ## Overview The main benefit of premium is an increased monthly character limit, by default, you get 6000 characters per month. This can be increased all the way up to 5000000 if that is so required! You get a few other benefits such as access to Google Translate, Deepl Translation, React to Translate, and increased Wordcloud limits. ## What Tier? There are so many! At first glance, it may look like there are 24 separate tiers, and whilst there technically are. In practise it's 8 tiers, with each tier having 1, 3, and 6 server options. Which tier you need depends entirely on how many characters you need per month. If you run the `/translation-usage` command, this will show you a monthly prediction at the bottom, although be aware it isn't always super accurate, especially not early in the month. The best thing to do is start with what you think will be enough, as you can always upgrade later on and you only have to pay the difference. {% embed url="" %} Buy a tier here! {% endembed %} # Setting up Premium in my Server So you've got your brand new tier, now how to start using it? ## It starts with a command First run `/patreon dashboard`. This will either pop up with an embed showing you lots of information (if it does you can move on to the next step), or most likely a message will appear asking you to allow Jake to view some account details with a custom link. This is needed so Jake can check what tier you have. Simply click on that link and follow the instructions within 5 minutes and you should be greeted with a screen on JakeBot's website, if it isn't a success screen it should tell you what the issue is. If it is, you are ready to move on!
## Telling Jake what server(s) to upgrade Now you've got that embed, you can see it shows you what tier you have and various information regarding that. It will also show you how many server upgrades you have remaining, and the servers you have already upgraded, which is probably none. All you have to do is run `/patreon upgrade [server]`. To upgrade the server of your choice, whilst you can specify the server using its ID or name, I'd recommend you simply run the command in the server you'd like to upgrade as it will upgrade that server. You can then repeat this for as many servers in the tier. ## Help! There are sometimes issues with these systems as they rely on a lot of different "moving" parts. So if you can't get your upgrade working correctly, please [join the support server](https://discord.com/invite/8JZwx82) as soon as possible and we can help you. Unless you're requesting a refund I ask you **not to send messages on Patreon** as they rarely get checked, and are quite inconvenient. # Translator Engine Overview What exactly is the difference between Google, Microsoft and DeepL? ## Google The most famous translation engine, it has the most available languages and most people consider it to be more accurate than Microsoft, although there is more nuance to this, as in my experience Microsoft often ends up being more accurate (Russian for example) Google Translate is the fastest translator available. ## Microsoft Quite a bit less well-known, and has a reputation for not being great. As mentioned prior, I think Microsoft is often more accurate than Google, although for certain languages I imagine Google is more accurate, if you have access to both it's probably worth trying each one out for a few days and seeing which works better for your language needs. Microsoft Translate is also slower than Google. ## DeepL The newest addition to the block. DeepL has a very limited selection of languages, basically just the main ones, however, its translation quality is far higher than either of the other available services. If you have access to it, and the languages you are translating to and from are part of its repertoire. I'd recommend using it. It is however even slower than Microsoft Translate. ## Conclusion If you need accuracy, go for DeepL.\ If you need speed, and lots of languages go for Google.\ If you need a mix of both, go for Microsoft. # Other Premium Commands There's only a couple, but they can be important!
/patreon downgrade [server] This can be used to downgrade a server you no longer want to have your premium tier. You can specify the server (ID Recommend, listed in the dashboard) but running it in an upgraded server will downgrade that server.
